Bosch Rexroth is the global leader in designing and manufacturing hydraulic control valves for industrial applications.
The company offers the most extensive range of on/off, logic, safety, and pressure other hydraulic valves – wider than any competitor’s – for all applications. You will find what you need to achieve an optimal solution.
All Bosch Rexroth valves are designed at the highest development level to ensure that you have the most responsive, reliable, and precise flow control for unparalleled repeatability.
Valves you can rely on
The world’s most comprehensive range of cost-efficient, reliable and robust valves to suit all types of applications.
Bosch Rexroth has everything you need to optimize your systems.
Directional spool valves
Directional spool valves control the flow direction and, thus, the directional movement of hydraulic actuators. The fluid flow will be restricted and permitted by the position of the spool.
The directional spool valves consist of the housing, one or two electronic solenoids, the control spool, and the return springs.
In the de-energized condition, the control spool is held the central position or in the initial position by the return springs.
If the electronic solenoid is supplied with power, the control spool moves out of its rest position into the required end position.
This way, the required flow direction according to the selected symbol is released.
After the electronic solenoid is switched off, the control spool is pushed back into its central position or initial position.
Symbolic representation
- The main ports are passages that allow fluid to pass through the valve. Typically, the ports are labeled with a single letter on the valve circuit diagrams as following:
- P is the pressure port that is connected to the pump.
- T is the tank port that is connected to the tank or reservoir.
- A and B are the working ports that are connected to the actuators.
- The number of switching positions is represented by the square boxes on the circuit diagrams.
- The circuit diagrams inside parentheses depict typical spool valve transition or crossover conditions, also known as the open transition.
The dash-lined boxes illustrate the functional action of the valve as the spools move within the housing to partially open and finally fully open.
There are two ways to select a directional spool valve from Bosch Rexroth:
1. Choose your Bosch Rexroth directional spool valves by function, pressure, and flow

2. Choose your Bosch Rexroth directional spool valves by circuit diagrams
(back to index)▲
When a spool valve shifts from one flow condition to another, it can pass through different flow conditions than those indicated by crossing arrows in the valve circuit diagram.
In some applications, what happens between the valve transition has consequences on system performance, so it is essential to know the valve port flow condition as it shifts.
Bosch Rexroth provides you with both the closed transition diagram and the open transition diagram to find suitable valves for your applications.
Directional spool valves are generally specified using the number of main ports and switching positions.
There are two types of switching positions from Bosch Rexroth:
